As Australians, the past few months have made clear just how devastating flash flooding and other climate disasters can be. They’ve also made clear the life-saving impact of being prepared.
Late last year, supporters like you generously donated to help our neighbours in Indonesia be ready, prepared, and resilient to future climate disasters. This can involve installing early warning mechanisms, training communities on what to do when a storm hits, or providing emergency support to help families rebuild their lives after floods, typhoons and other disasters.
Meet Wiranto
Wiranto is one of the people already making this happen, with support from people like you and Oxfam partner KONSEPSI.
Wiranto is a member of the Village Disaster Preparedness Team in East Lombok, Indonesia. KONSEPSI provided Wiranto’s team with training, and practical items like rain gauges, which they use to predict floods and keep their community safe.
In the event of heavy rainfall, they visit every hamlet and let them know a flood is imminent so they can be prepared, saving belongings, homes and lives. Wiranto is grateful to now have the skills and knowledge to keep his community safe. And his community agrees.
“My friends are also thankful we got the guidance from KONSEPSI and Oxfam on how to manage and anticipate flood. What’s important is that we have the knowledge now,” Wiranto says.
Our work is only possible because of people like you. You play a critical role in helping families around the world be resilient in the face of future climate disasters. Thank you.
