The First Peoples Small Grants program aims to increase the impact of First Nations partner organisations working to address inequities experienced by First Peoples.

We know that by working in support of First Nations-led organisations we can create better and more localised outcomes for communities.

Oxfam Australia has been working alongside Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people for over 40 years.

Oxfam Australia is as determined as ever to work with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and organisations towards First Peoples achieving self-determination and realising their rights. Towards closing the gaps in healthcare, education and housing, and creating a more equal future for everyone.

Working towards gender equality in the Kimberleys

In November 2022, The Kimberley Aboriginal Women's Council (KAWC) signed a memorandum with Oxfam Australia to work towards gender equality for First Nations women in the Kimberley region. KAWC Chairperson Janine Dureau and Oxfam Australia's Chief Executive Lyn Morgain talk about this significant partnership.

Oxfam has a history of working with First Peoples in the Kimberley region over a number of decades. In 1980, Oxfam supported Traditional Owners in their fight for land rights during the Nookanbah dispute when the Western Australia Government approved drilling for oil on their sacred lands. In 2016, Oxfam partnered with the Kimberley Aboriginal Land Council on the Making Rights a Reality Report along with a series of papers written to inform public debate on development and humanitarian policy issues.

Most recently, Oxfam partnered with the Kimberley Aboriginal Women’s Council (KAWC) in 2020 and 2021 through their small grants to partners initiative supporting the KAWC roundtable, regional action plan and strategic workshop.
